Ah designers, we’re a different bunch aren’t we. For most industries, as soon as you leave college, that is it, finished, in terms of reconnecting with past students, lecturers and colleagues. However as designers, we tend to connect a lot more, whether it’s through our ongoing work, blogs, portfolio, websites or exhibitions.

This theory has been brought to The Creative Cycle exhibition on Fri 15th June and will feature original work from past students of AIT’s Design Department. The exhibition will focus on poster design in which the designers where simply given the title “The Creative Cycle”. The Exhibition will also feature one of our very own Scapegoat team. This is a very clever idea, in these times of belt tightening, a free exhibition showing some of the countries talented young designers really has caught a lot of peoples imagination. It seems a no brainer to go along and support this well thought out exhibition.

Samples of work from some of the featured designers;

Everything costs so much money today, so we have decided to treat you all to some free stuff. Ok, we didn’t foot the bill for these but we have put together a collection of useful free fonts that we happen to like. From grungy band posters to slightly out there logo creations, sometimes an ‘alternative’ typeface can work perfectly. We all know the right font choice can make or break your brief but sometimes you just can’t decide on a suitable typeface. This is where you can expand your options, don’t play it so safe, be open to the design blasphemy that is free fonts, but also don’t pick any old random free yoke. You’re still the designer after all.

We all have our classic fonts that cannot be replaced, but as free options go, these fonts can hold their own in the world of kitsch free fonts.

http://www.fontsquirrel.com/fonts/Josefin

Yes, typewriter parts.

He reassembles typewriters into anatomically correct human and animal figures. He does not solder, weld, or glue these unique assemblages together - the process is entirely cold assembly.

He uses the screws, set-pin collars, pins, springs, nuts, bolts, and snap rings to attach all of the pieces. The sheer amount of work that goes into these sculptures can not be understated, it takes up 1400 hours for each human sculpture.

“After collecting typewriters, I carefully disassemble them without damaging any components. I then categorized them by how they correspond to the anatomy; for instance, I have a whole bin full of clavicles.” Jeremy Mayer.

I dont know what it is about these mechanical sculpures that I like so much, I think its the classic, take one thing from its natural state and creating something completely new with it. These sculptures are amazing and now that we all have computers, I’m putting it forward that all unused typewriters be forwarded on to Jeremy Mayer. Whether he wants them or not.

Countries like The U.S, Russia, Britain and even our little old Emerald Isle have their versions. Some posters are immortalised in our minds and usually serve as a powerful image aimed at striking pride, courage and sometimes shame. With all the recent political scandal in the land of Saints and Scholars, I have looked at some of the best examples and the lasting effect they had on their countries.

1. J. M. Flagg’s 1917 poster was used to recruit soldiers for both World War I and World War II. It still stands as one of the most powerful images/posters of the 20th century.

2. J. Howard Miller’s posters became the famous “We Can Do It!” Another American poster to encourage women to take to the factories as their husbands fought in needless wars.

3. Essential student poster but also one of the most recognised images in the world. Jim Fitzpatrick’s version of this photograph stood as a mark of defiance to the U.S, ultimately becoming the face of the Cuban revolution after Guevara’s death in 1967.

4. One of the more modern Posters, from 2010, U.S presidential hopeful Barrack Obama issued these now iconic posters. By simply portraying his face with the word hope while being saturated in the American colours, It symbolised hope, positivity, honesty and assurance.

5. That leaves our own attempt. With the last couple of weeks revealing deep rooted corruption throughout our political elite, former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern is now immortalised in his own spin off of Obama’s positive poster. Ironically it is a satirical contradiction of what Obama’s poster represents, not hope, not honesty but rather no hope, crooked and dishonest.

LOOKS A BIT LIKE...

Whilst socialising with a fellow designer friend of mine last week, our conversation inevitably turned to current design trends. My friend (we’ll call him Jon) asked me the “Did ya ever notice that…..” Question. The subject in particular this time was how some logos have significant resemblances to other icon/emblems. The logo in question was the Pepsi logo, he was trying his best to prove how the Pepsi was a rip off of the simple Ying and Yang symbol by crudely sketching them both on a tissue paper. I bettered him by referring to an apt example I had come across in which famous logos were stripped back to their ‘potential inspiration’.

After researching this theory a little more, I came across a fascinating pictogram.

Uncanny!

We were delighted to be selected to work with Tony & Miriam Monahan on their new food product The Radical Oats. It is a new breakfast product but to be honest, you could eat it anytime. They brought us in a sample and I have to say that it is very tasty.

With a Bord Bia exhibition coming up it was important for the guys to have a strong logo and branding. The deadline is tight but at Scapegoat Design we don’t mind working under a bit of pressure! What you see above you is the final logo design and the feedback has been great so far on both the branding and the product itself.

The next stage will be packaging and hopefully a website so we’ll keep you informed on how that is going. All feedback is gratefully appreciated!

Beautiful Charles Burns style artwork here!

Beautiful Charles Burns style artwork here!

oliphillips:
